I’ve never been a big fan of what the community calls “the Big Six”; the six mathematically NECESSARY items a PC must have just to keep up with the level-scaling math of the game. As both a GM and as a player, handing out or discovering a Ring of Protection (no matter the bonus) has always been the most bland and uninteresting gaming moment. And the same can go for Amulets of Natural Armor and Cloaks of Resistance and even your ability boosting items; just a small number bonus that you forget about in about 15 minutes after your rogue gets herself caught in a pit trap.
